China successfully launched its first microgravitysatellite, the SJ-10, at the Jiuquan Satellite LaunchCenter in Gansu province Wednesday at 1:38 am.
Designed in the shape of a bullet, the SJ-10 carries19 experimental loads for 28 scientific researchprojects in microgravity, involving microgravity fluidphysics, microgravity combustion, space material, space radiation effect, microgravity biological effectand space bio-technology.
Microgravity experiments have previously been carried out on space facilities, including spacestations, space shuttles and research rockets.
The SJ-10 will stay in the orbit for a few days and an orbital module will stay in orbit anotherfew days for additional experiments.
The SJ-10 is the second of four scientific satellites under a CAS space program. Unlike the otherthree, the SJ-10 is returnable. It is the 25th such retrievable satellite launched by China.
"The recoverable satellite is a useful and efficient tool for microgravity experiments, comparedto space stations and research rockets," said physicist Hu Wenrui, chief scientist of SJ-10 and amember of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
