We know that in public speaking, correct use ofgestures will help enhance our messages. Emojisthat flourish in our daily non-verbalcommunication can serve this function too, if theyare employed properly.
In recent years, I've noticed with amazement howemoticons and smiley faces have crept into my officelife. Supervisors start the day with them as theyissue instructions on social messaging app WeChat. Staff who are mostly in their late 20s and30s respond with a wild variety of emojis that laugh, weep, blush or swagger. Even thesecretary has instilled a personal note in her daily reminder to all for the submission of thenext day's work plan, with an icon of a red rose.
They worked like arms and hands in a speech that helped me emphasize a point or ensurewhat I said was not misunderstood. For laughter, users can pick a face with a smile, snicker orgiggle and other expressions to show.
But emojis, especially those pictures with Chinese characters, are not for everybody and mostprobably not appropriate for business communication.
