Hawking gets over 1m Weibo followers

British astrophysicist Stephen Hawking opened an official account on China’s Twitter-like Sina Weibo on Tuesday morning, becoming what the country’s online community sees the most renowned scientist ever to do so.
Sending his greetings to Chinese netizens, Hawking recollected his two trips to China in 2006 and 1985, and expressed his wish to communicate with his Chinese fans.
He was instantly welcomed by excited Weibo users, gaining almost 400,000 followers and receiving more than 60,000 comments in under two hours. And the numbers are still climbing rapidly.
Netizens extended their warm welcome to Hawking, with many leaving messages thanking him for his contribution to the world.
“I cannot believe it. This is a historical moment. I’m so close to the grand master!” a netizen said, whose feelings appeared to be shared by many others.
Some Weibo users took the opportunity to ask Hawking scientific questions including gravitational waves and extra-terrestrials, while some said they are reading Hawking’s A Brief History of Time.
As one of China’s largest microblogging service, Sina Weibo,with 222 million monthly active users, has seen many tech and political heavyweights registered as users, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Indian Prime MinisterNarendra Modi.
Born on January 8, 1942, Hawking is well-known and respected in China not only for his achievements in physics, but also for the inspiring and encouraging story of his fight with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
"Hawking’s popularity shows the Chinese people’s great enthusiasm for science, especially among the young generation, which is inspiring for the country’s future," Steven Dong, a professor at the Communications University of China, told the Global Times.
Many foreign politicians and celebrities have established accounts on Sina Weibo, including British Prime Minister David Cameron and Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise.
"The world’s leading scientists cannot give up on communicating with a country that has one-fourth of the world’s population and increasing influence," Dong added.
